What is a Charter School?
A charter school is a type of public school. Charter schools provide education through a "charter," which is a type of contract granted by a chartering entity such as the commissioner of education, State Board of Education (SBOE), or the board of trustees of an independent school district.
Charter Home - Purpose and Definition
In 1995, the Texas Education Code established a new type of public school, known as a charter school. Charter schools are subject to fewer state laws than other public schools with the idea of ensuring fiscal and academic accountability without undue regulation of instructional methods or pedagogical innovation. Like school districts, charter schools are monitored and accredited by the state.
According to the Texas Education Code, the purposes of charter schools are to:
- improve student learning;
- increase the choice of learning opportunities within the public school system;
- create professional opportunities that will attract new teachers to the public school system;
- establish a new form of accountability for public schools; and
- encourage different and innovative learning methods.

Congratulations to ESC Region 11 Teachers of the Year
A Lewisville ISD elementary teacher and Northwest ISD secondary teacher have been selected to represent the north central Texas region in this year’s state Teacher of the Year competition. Alexis Miller, a third-grade teacher at Southridge Elementary School in Lewisville ISD, and Lisa Day, an English teacher at Northwest High School in Northwest ISD, were named the 2020 Region 11 Teachers of the Year during a special virtual awards ceremony streamed on Facebook on August 3, 2020.
The ceremony, hosted by the Education Service Center Region 11 and generously funded by the EECU credit union recognizes all of the teachers of the year from school districts in the north central Texas region. The Teacher of the Year Program, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Administrators, allows districts to submit one elementary and one secondary candidate to compete at the regional and state levels. Seventy-one teachers, representing 37 school districts in Region 11, participated
in this year’s competition.
Special congratulations to Crisha Pearson from Trinity Basin Charter School for her honor as being named her school's Elementary Teacher of the Year!
Next year, our goal is to have even more Teacher of the Year submissions from ESC Region 11 Charter Schools. Our charter school teachers are so deserving!
