Physical Fitness Assessment Instrument (PFAI)
January 12, 2021:
Curriculum Standards and Student Support Division at the Texas Education Agency (TEA)
These are unprecedented times and our current situation is an interesting one when it comes to the physical fitness assessment. The suspension of the physical fitness assessment was only for the 2019-2020 academic year. I have not heard anything about the requirement being waived or suspended for the 2020-2021 academic year, therefore your district will need to plan accordingly.
The current contract for a web-based application ended on August 31, 2019. We are working through a timeline of access and availability of a web-based collection tool for this academic year. Information and updates about the required physical fitness assessment will be posted to the physical fitness assessment web page and will also be sent out via the health and physical education listserv as they become available. To sign up for updates please visit https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/TXTEA/subscriber/new.
Please note that the physical fitness assessment initiative (PFAI) application, which requires a TEAL account, is still an option for districts to use to submit data to the agency if your district does not want to wait on a web-based submission tool. You still would submit the data using the text file format.
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Given the systemic closure of schools resulting from the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the governor has used his authority under Texas Government Code, §418.016 to suspend the physical fitness assessment of students (TEC, §38.101) and the reporting of those results (TEC, §38.103) for the 2019-2020 school year. This information was posted on TEA’s COVID-19 Support and Guidance website in the Assessment section on March 27, 2020.
The COVID-19 Support and Guidance website was established to provide information and resources for Texas school districts and schools. Please use this website as your initial source for information. Guidance will be provided on an ongoing basis as information and updates become available.
