    Description: There is an increasing number of culturally and linguistically diverse students who are English Language Learners (ELLs) in America’s schools; many of these children come from backgrounds of poverty. Professionals frequently experience challenges with differentiating language differences from language impairments in ELL students who are struggling in school. This workshop addresses nonbiased assessment strategies and materials that can be used to differentiate language differences from language impairments in ELL students from any linguistic background.

    Description: This workshop focuses on practical strategies and materials for clinicians who serve ELLs (English Language Learners) with language impairments. The information will help clinicians who serve preschool and elementary students from any cultural-linguistic background. Participants will receive easy-to-implement, fun, effective ideas for helping ELL students who are learning English as well as coping with language impairments. The session will focus on increasing oral and written language skills and on collaborating with classroom teachers. Relating IEP benchmarks and therapy goals to standards will be reviewed.

    Description: The speech-language pathology services a student receives are based on the individualized needs of the student; therefore, no single service delivery model is appropriate for ALL students. Speech-language pathologists need to understand the range of service delivery options in the school setting as well as the advantages and potential barriers to each. In this session, we will explore a range of evidence-based service delivery methods with various locations, formats, intensities, frequencies, and durations and hear from school-based SLPs in Texas who have implemented these various methodologies.

Legal briefs & court decisions involving current legal regulations will be reviewed.

That’s because social-pragmatic communication is dependent upon a dynamic interplay between psychology, language, and context. This session will provide you with the techniques to perform a comprehensive assessment of social-pragmatics that allows for functional gains to occur. You will understand how anxiety impacts performance and how to write meaningful social-pragmatic goals.

    Description: Too often, treatment focuses on targeting specific areas of deficiency and fails to recognize the underlying reasons causing the deficiency. When treatment targets the causal factors, gains occur in a wide variety of observed social behaviors. Transference of learned behavior occurs more rapidly, and greater satisfaction in social settings results. You will learn how the interplay between the foundational skills of Theory of Mind, Central Coherence, Executive Function, and Emotional Intelligence together with psychodynamics create social deficits and how to treat accordingly to produce meaningful, long-lasting positive change.

    Statewide SLP Webinar #8: Unique Speech-Language Therapy: Wonderful Websites with Practical Therapy Tips

    Description: This hands-on course is designed to meet the needs of speech-language pathologists serving school-age children and adolescents with various communication difficulties by providing them with original and exciting ways to motivate and teach students. Creative ideas will be shared on how to put new spins on traditional speech-language therapy by introducing various websites that can be used as fun and functional digital therapy materials. Participants will be involved in discussions related to skills and foundational knowledge.
