  • Positive Behavior Supports and Autism

Posted by Michael Hinesly at 11/28/2012
One of the basic tenets of Positive Behavior Supports is "All means All."  It is a phrase that goes to the heart of PBIS.  What happens when the tenet becomes more than just a statement of philosophy and moves to become everyday practice...even when it includes students with autism.  It works!  Here is one such success story.

  • Early Treatment Sparks Striking Brain Changes in Autism

Posted by Michael Hinesly at 11/7/2012
A new study released by the Yale Child Study Center has sparked interest with new research findings that would suggest that PRT(Pivotal Response Treatment) used as early intervention indicate an increase in communication/socialization as well as improvements in behavior.  We know that early intervention in autism is key for children on the spectrum to make progress.  The findings of this study certainly would suggest that to be true and also is more data that PRT is an evidence based practice.  See the story here

  • New study finds that 50% of children with autism wander off

Posted by Michael Hinesly at 10/11/2012
A new study by IAN Project of the Kennedy Krieger Institute finds that parents report that nearly 50% of children with autism have gone missing long enough to cause significant concern about safety.  This is an alarming finding that is a cause for alert among schools and families.  These particular findings should be cause for alarm among professionals:
  •       Half of families with elopers report they had never received advice or guidance about elopement from a professional
  •       Only 19% had received such support from a psychologist or mental health professional
  •       Only 14% had received guidance from their pediatrician or another physician
  • It is imperative for professional help families with intervention strategies to keep their children safe.  Read the full story here.

  • Research Suggest Students with Autism Make Easy Targets for Bullying

Posted by Michael Hinesly at 9/21/2012
An article posted in Time magazine's Healtland suggests that students with autism spectrum disorders are bullied nearly five times as often than neuro-typical peers.  Schools and districts must create school climates that tolerate individual differences.  I am afraid that until this happens students with autism spectrum disorders will continue to be bullied and harrassed.  You can read more about the study here.

  • Research from Caltech find Evidence of a Link Between Autism and Immune System

Posted by Michael Hinesly at 7/27/2012
Researchers at California Institute of Technology have released their research findings of a possible link between immune system irregularities and autism. Using a mouse model, researchers were able to tie together autistic-like behaviors with changes in the immune system.  According to Dr. Paul Patterson, the Anne P. and Benjamin F. Biaggini Professor of Biological Sciences at Caltech, who was the lead in the study, "We have long suspected that the immune system plays a role in the development of autism spectrum disorder. In our studies of a mouse model based on an environmental risk factor for autism, we find that the immune system of the mother is a key factor in the eventual abnormal behaviors in the offspring."

Where these findings will lead future researchers will be interesting to follow to say the least....
