John Petree was named deputy executive director of Instructional Services for Education Service Center Region 11 in 2013. Prior to that, he was associate executive director at Education Service Center Region 18 in Midland, Texas, where his responsibilities included overseeing all aspects of the ESC including, operations, curriculum, instruction, accountability, assessment, special programs, federal programs, finance, technology, information systems, human resources and public relations.
An employee of ESC Region 18 since 2006, Petree held various other positions during his employment there, including consultant, coordinator of the Teacher Certification Program, and director of Administrative Services. He began his career in education as a teacher at Crane Independent School District and held the position of principal in two school districts.
Petree has a superintendent certification, and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration, both earned from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He also has certifications in mid-management, elementary education, as an appraiser for the Professional Development and Appraisal System, in instructional leadership training and instructional leadership development.
